How to Decorate a New Home

Where to start? You are probably feeling overwhelmed with the task. Rest assured it can be an easy, fun and exciting process. First, depending on the style of your home you need to pick a style. That's not to say you have to stick to that one style. You may find along the way that you veer
off to other styles, however, you probably wouldn't stray too far. For example if traditional speaks to you chances are odd that you will come home with a contemporary painting of for example two purple squares on a white canvas. There are also ways to mix and match styles and still have them mix. For example you might have floral black and white prints that would go beautifully with a contemporary breakfast area. Another route to take would be a theme. You might live near the water, therefore a simple nautical (blues and whites) theme would work nicely. You may even opt for the Captains wheel on a wall in the den! Making your home personal to you is vital and key. Instead of hanging store bought pictures, hang pictures of prints that you like. Easily done now with digital cameras.

Another good idea!
Decorating Ideas:

Place a single rose/flower on a tray/plate similar in size and place in the middle of a (clear - no other items) table. Creating a beautiful image as well as a sense of calm and peacefulness.

Place a piece of glass cut to size on top of your desk/work area. Underneath place a beautiful piece of (matching size) any beautiful paper/fabric/wallpaper. On my desk I have a piece of solid light blue paper and I have small cut outs of art works. When you get tired of it simply change the paper/fabric.

Stencil your bathroom walls with a contrasting color. Simple, easy, inexpensive.

Paint one wall in any room a different color, creating a focus point.

Frame any pictures you find enjoyable to look at from google images, simply print in color, add a plain and simple frame and your done. I've printed pretty floral images and placed them in gold colored frames.

Place your favorite books on your coffee table and add a bowl of oranges or lemons for an instant visual pleasure. Both calming to the mind and beautiful to look at.

Repaint your living room light blue or a beautiful shade of periwinkle.

Kids room needs repainting? Opt for plain white and trace round pencil circles from a piece of cardboard and choose your color! or colors. My daughter opted for hunter green circles and a nice white paper lantern.

Using chalkboard paint, which now comes in many colors, (the classics always work best, green or black) and create an instant message wall. Make the border with cut molding pieces from Home Depot (you may need a little help with the corners) nail to the wall, to the size of your liking and paint the inside. Presto! an instant message wall. Oh and tie a piece of chalk on a string and nail to the side for the ever ready writing tool.

Line those drawers with beautiful wallpapers or even wrapping paper (only if they don't get a lot of use). My desk is lined with mermaid wrapping paper I picked up on vacation at Martha's Vineyard.

Clean/up those office files. Staples now has really pretty heavy duty file folders.

Use a lot of silver. Its not expensive (try ebay), it adds shine and shimmer to any decor. Easier to clean with the great products available (try wrights). Just one wipe and your done.

Repaint in blues and greens.

Clear clutter!!!!

Decorate with your life goals hidden (or not) in the decor. I have two riding hats hanging from my umbrella stand in the hopes of going horseback riding one day.

Give your childrens art work a helping hand by adding a piece of colored construction paper and hang them all (or many as you can fit:) on one wall. It will make it all look much more unified and of course put great big smiles on your kids faces.

Simple is best. If you are in a small space create many points of interest. (example the art pictures under the glass on the desk) In a larger space create statements! The largest glass you can possibly find filled with your favorite objects, fruits, flowers, a gold fish?

Even one small oil painting (or more than one) can add beauty to your space. But make sure its something you enjoy looking at.

Buy your favorite fabric and make your own simple drapes just for a quick change between seasons. No sewing involved if you use iron on hem products. For summer a simple linen will do.

One of my recent favorites, buy lined by the yard and make your own hand towels. Hem the edges and trim one end with pretty ribbon or embroider your self.

Change all the hangers in your closet to match.

Add a plant.

Buy a Feng Shui book, implement any changes.

Did I mention get a goldfish? Or even better a beta fish ( less mess and they live longer).

A small water fountain will also add peace to your space.

Its all good:)

Naming homes dates back to Roman times and is a practice that has been ignored today. Naming your home says a lot about who you are, your tastes and perhaps even your aspirations, why not visit www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/questions/housenames.htm for some examples of names given to homes in England and then name your own home. Naming your home no matter the size will give it character and charm. Also order some note pads and perhaps even pencils with your homes name on it too. Another Great Idea!
If you are thinking of writing a book and have a busy life style, why not set aside a particular day and time to start your venture! Use the time to gather notes, phone numbers of contacts etc and place in a folder for you to develop the next time you sit down at your designated day and time. You will be amazed at how small amounts of time set aside weekly will move you swiftly along with your project. Another Great Idea!
